CandleLight Warriors & Human Machines...

No no...this is NOT from a fictional or sci-fi movie...

It's the activities we did for the recent SMJK Katholik Teambuilding and Leadership Camp 'Teens Helping Teens' at the Trolak Country Resort in Sungkai from the 4th - 6th April.

41 students and 6 teachers... That is a lot to handle for Daryl and myself being the facilitators from Taylor's.

We left the school at about 1:30pm for Sungkai Hot Springs prior to checking in to the resort.

Trolak Country Resort is located within a Felda settlement between Slim River and Sungkai. If you exit at the Sungkai/ Slim River on the North South Highway, it takes approximately 15 minutes for you to reach the resort via the trunkroad.

The first activity we conducted was a brief lecture on leadership "Why Leaders Fail?", followed by a Night 'Soft Drop' Walk.

The following day we had raft building, and yes, the teachers and the facis took part. Eventually we emerged winners because we had 2 extra horsepower. We conducted the 'Human Machine' after lunch and thereafter spent the entire afternoon going through the low and high ropes plus the flying fox activity.

After dinner, we briefed the students and gathered the learning outcomes from all the activities. Then we proceed to conduct the 'CandleLight Warriors' where 2 teams pit against each other to extinguish tea light candles using the water guns.

And thanks to the students, Daryl and myself got splashed with endless pails of water after the activity. * i know u all are laughing at this Dan Shiow and Leon*

We left the camp the following afternoon, and we surely hope that they have learnt a thing or two on LEADERSHIP and TEAM DYNAMICS...

Do You Know??

We're exposed to 2000-2500 form of advertisements in a day from the various medias, the things you see, feel or hear. And that's from the moment you get off your bed to the time you get back ON it!

It takes you a maximum of 8.6 sec to read that flyer given to you at the edge of the escalator before you throw it away.

Today, there are more than 50 forms of media out there trying to get you to notice them.

There are words such as Cola-Colanization and MacDonaldization...

Nike pays US1.3o per day to workers in their manufacturing plants from third world countries.

Bodyshop 'Against Animal Testing?'..that's a whole lot of crap... yes they do test their stuff on animals.

You can never differentiate 2 cups of cola placed together even though one is Pepsi. And why is that colas have to always be a Coke?

You'll never get a pair of Nike sneakers for less than a hundred ringgit! And if it was RM90.99, you'll say it's FAKE!!

There is an average of a hundred blogs created in the United States every minute.

An eighteen year old today is much more well informed that an eighteen year old 20 years ago, a result of the emergence of internet technology.

Whatever you wear, use, purchase and subscribe is the result of communication.

Every big brand today try very hard to ensure that you hear, see and feel them at least 3 times day.

The Making of the Dragon...

From this...

Imagine a sculpture 4 feet high, made of solid sugar, melted and moulded into this magnificent piece of sugar art...

This is the sugar artwork of Chef Patrick Siau, a lecturer at the Taylor's School of Hospitality and Tourism. Combining the characteristics and elements of a Western and Chinese 'dragon', this work of art will be exhibited at the Food & Hotel Asia Competition in Singapore. This competition will witness chefs from around the region pit for the award of 'Best Sugar Art' Category.

to this??

Sugar art is a form of culinary skill where raw sugar is boiled to liquid form at a high temperature of 170 degrees. The formation of the sculpture is done by delicately moulding the bits and pieces into place.

This is no easy task according to Chef Patrick; it took him and his students a week to put together the pieces of this 'dragon', and this is all part of the practice before the actual competition.

Chef Patrick Siau in action...
If you want to take a peek at this incredible piece of art, the sculpture is currently on display at the Pastry Kitchen at the Taylor's School of Hospitality and Tourism.

Just be reminded that the sculpture is pretty fragile...
