Tappin' Their Design Potential...

How many times do you choose a product based on its sleek and stylish design although it costs you more?

LIKE ALWAYS!!!!

Would you rather have this??

Or this??

In the modern world that is filled with a multitude of products, many businesses rely on outstanding design to create a strong identity for their brand and stand out from the competition.

The Design School @ Taylor's recently organised the Creativity Encounters Workshop for over 80 youths to learn about the importance of design in the business world and explore their design potential. The workshops allowed participants to understand and maximise their personal creative and design capacities as well as understand the career opportunities available in the creative industries.

Thanks to their participation in the workshops the youths discovered that creativity is not a trait of which only a select few possess. But it is inherent in most people and can be developed in an enjoyable and interactive manner.

The Making of the Dragon...

From this...

Imagine a sculpture 4 feet high, made of solid sugar, melted and moulded into this magnificent piece of sugar art...

This is the sugar artwork of Chef Patrick Siau, a lecturer at the Taylor's School of Hospitality and Tourism. Combining the characteristics and elements of a Western and Chinese 'dragon', this work of art will be exhibited at the Food & Hotel Asia Competition in Singapore. This competition will witness chefs from around the region pit for the award of 'Best Sugar Art' Category.

to this??

Sugar art is a form of culinary skill where raw sugar is boiled to liquid form at a high temperature of 170 degrees. The formation of the sculpture is done by delicately moulding the bits and pieces into place.

This is no easy task according to Chef Patrick; it took him and his students a week to put together the pieces of this 'dragon', and this is all part of the practice before the actual competition.

Chef Patrick Siau in action...
If you want to take a peek at this incredible piece of art, the sculpture is currently on display at the Pastry Kitchen at the Taylor's School of Hospitality and Tourism.

Just be reminded that the sculpture is pretty fragile...
